–An investigation is underway after an Algona woman died in a Central Iowa Jail early Tuesday morning.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, 31-year-old Merissa Marie Hogan was arrested just after 6:15 PM Monday by the Newton Police Department on a charge of Operating While Intoxicated. Hogan was booked into the Jasper County Jail to await an initial court appearance.

Sheriff’s Department officials say that just after 12 AM Tuesday, medical care was requested at the Jasper County Jail for an inmate that was unresponsive. Medical personnel responded to the facility, but Hogan was later pronounced dead.

A complete autopsy will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s office to try and determine a cause of death, as officials say foul play is not suspected.

The Iowa DCI will lead the official investigation into Hogan’s death with assistance from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
