Authorities Believe Alcohol Played a Role in Crash Along River Road

–A Texas man was cited after the car he was driving left the roadway and struck a utility pole north of Algona late last week.

According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Matthew Kunik of Austin, Texas was traveling west bound on River Road, north of the intersection with 240th Street, in a 2025 Volkswagen Jetta just after 1 AM on Thursday, September 25th.

The accident report states that Kunik failed to negotiate a curve in the road and entered the west ditch, where he collided with an electrical pole owned by Algona Municipal Utilities.

Deputies determined the Kunik was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, and an alcohol test was performed.

Kunik did not report any injuries. He was cited for failure to maintain control.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $10,000 while damage to the utility pole was estimated at $2,000.
