–An Algona man was injured in a 2-vehicle crash Thursday evening along Iowa Highway 3 in Buena Vista County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, 37-year-old Fidel Rodriguez of Algona was traveling eastbound on Highway 3 north of Alta in a 2009 Freightliner Semi just before 9 PM. As Rodriguez approached the intersection with county road M31, he was struck head on by a westbound, 1995 Ford Econoline van, driven by 46-year-old Jay Lockwood of Rembrandt.
The accident report states that Lockwood was attempting to overtake another westbound vehicle when he entered the eastbound lane and collided with the Rodriguez vehicle. Lockwood’s van ended up in the middle of Highway 3 while the semi came to rest on its passenger side, blocking the roadway.
Rodriguez was taken by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash, as the accident report states that he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Lockwood, who was not wearing a seatbelt, had to be extricated from his vehicle before being flown to Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls by Mercy Air Med.
The accident remains under investigation.
