–Activities will resume this evening after classes in the Algona Community School District were canceled Friday by a bomb threat. Administrators learned of the threat around 7AM and immediately contacted local law enforcement. Just after 9AM, Superintendent Joe Carter addressed the situation.

According to the Algona Police Department, a thorough search was conducted and a K9 officer trained to detect explosive devices was used to clear the building. The threat is believed to be automated and directed towards multiple school districts that begin with the letter “A”. Local law enforcement officials are working with the Iowa DCI and the FBI to investigate the threats.  Algona Police Chief Bo Miller says that anytime a threat is made, law enforcement takes it seriously.

Reports out of eastern Iowa indicate the Alburnett School District received similar threats this morning. Carter says they tried to alert parents to the situation as quickly as they could through social media and the district’s smartphone app.

Now that a complete search of the building has been conducted and the building cleared, the district announced that activities will resume as planned Friday night and through the weekend.  Any parent who did not receive notifications this morning is encouraged to download the Algona school’s app by clicking on the link available at www.algona.k12.ia.us.
