Thursday’s Area Scorboard: Trio of Area Runners Punch State XC Tickets

Cross Country

-A handful of area cross country runners in class 1A are headed to the state meet after racing at yesterday’s state qualifying meets.

Bishop Garrigan sophomore Julia Swift is off to state for the 2nd year in a row, as Swift finished 5th in 19 minutes and 43 seconds at the state qualifying meet hosted by Newman Catholic.  The rest of Bishop Garrigan’s top 5 featured Emma Kollasch in 37th in 23:08, Rachel Kahle in 39th in 23:15, Eva Kolhaas in 56th in 24:46, and Rosanne Curtis taking 64th in 26:43.

Bishop Garrigan had two athletes in the boys race, both recording season best times, with Caiden Buckner in 33rd in 19:05, and Corbin Darling in 70th in 21:00.

The other two area state qualifiers came from the qualifying meet hosted in Emmetsburg, as West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach took first place by over a minute in 19 minutes and 2 seconds, her fourth cross country state berth, while North Union’s Alexis Cummins also moves on to state by taking 6th in 21:19, her second career state trip.

Also competing for West Bend-Mallard were Lilly Morey and Maddie Fehr, who were 20th and 21st respectively in 22:42 and 22:52, as well as Nevayda Ingram in 41st in 25:26. 

Alyssa Welbig also ran for North Union, taking 27th in 23:29.

In the boys race, Landon Manwarren paced the Warriors, finishing 29th in 20:19, while Traecer Starnes placed 46th in 21:27, Kade Madden was 57th in 22:15, Samuel Kirkegaard was 69th in 23:34, and Edward Champney was 78th in 26:23.

Bryson Campen was the lone Wolverine competitor, as he placed 68th in 23:26.
