–The Algona City Council welcomed one new member and two returning members during their meeting on Monday.
Carl Westling took his seat as the new Ward 1 councilman after winning the seat in November.
Brad Hoover and Don Johnson also returned to the council for another term. Neither was on the ballot in November, but each of them secured their seats through write-in votes.
Hoover launched a write-in campaign this fall and received the most votes for the Council At-Large seat he previously held.
Hoover was also the top vote-getter in Ward 3, where a write-in candidate was needed after nobody filled out the paperwork to be on November’s ballot. However, since Hoover does not reside within Ward #3, he was unable to accept that seat. Johnson ended up getting the 2nd highest number of write-in votes for the seat and agreed to serve another term.
The council also approved the appointment of At Large Councilperson Kathy Dearchs as Mayor Pro Tem.
