–Winter weather conditions contributed to a head-on collision along US Highway 169 north of Algona late last month.

According to a report recently released by the Kossut County Sheriff’s Department, 82-year-old DeWayne Hatten of Bancroft was northbound on Highway 169 in a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer around 4:15 PM on Wednesday, January 21st. As Hatten approached the intersection with 240th Street, just south of Smith Lake, he lost control and crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2018 Ford Super Crew truck, driven by 22-year-old Parker Eichenberger of Bancroft.

The accident report states the highway was covered with snow at the time of the collision, with blowing snow reducing visibility.

Hatten and a passenger were taken by ambulance to Kossuth Regional Health Center for treatment of injuries, as the passenger had to be extracted by mechanical means. Eichenberger went to the clinic the following day for treatment of injuries.

Both vehicles were considered a total loss.
