Kossuth Historical Society Seeking Railroad Photos

–The Kossuth County Historical Society is assisting an Algona man with a project to document the history of railroads and depots that thrived in the area nearly a century ago. Jean Kramer, with the historical society, tells KLGA News they are looking for anyone who may have some photographs at home, tucked away in storage and collecting dust.

Richard Shieck is leading the project to try and tell the story of how the railroads helped settle the area after Kossuth County was established in 1851. He is looking for photos to add to the collection they already have in an effort to put a book together on the subject.

Schieck says at one time there were 26 railroad depots scattered across Kossuth County, and they are hoping to find area residents who have old photos of these facilities that served as a hub for travel and commerce when the county was in its infancy.

At one time Algona had three different railroad depots, each served by a different rail line. Anyone who may have a photo documenting railroad life in Kossuth County can call Richard Schieck at 515-341-6762 or Jean Kramer at 515-200-9389, or email kossuthhistoricalsociety@gmail.com.
