–The former State Senator from Northwest Iowa who is seeking the Republican party nomination for US Senate this November will stop in Algona on Monday. Jim Carlin served in Iowa’s 3rd Senate District from 2017-2022, and is now looking to replace Senator Joni Ernst, who is not seeking reelection. In an interview with KLGA News, Carlin talked about why he threw his name in the ring last April.

The 63-year-old from Sioux City was born in Massachusetts and served in the army before establishing his law practice in Northwest Iowa. He announced his bid in April of 2025, with plans to challenge incumbent Joni Ernst in the Republican party primary. Carlin says he decided to run at that time because there always seemed to be a difference between what Ernst said to her constituents in Iowa and how she voted in Washington.

Hours after Ernst announced that she would not seek another term last September, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson announced she would seek the seat. Carlin says Hinson is much like Ernst, saying one thing and then doing something completely different.

Carlin will be the featured speaker at the Kossuth County Republican Central Committee meeting Monday evening, which will run from 6:30-8 PM at the Algona Pizza Ranch. He received around 26% of the vote when he challenged Senator Chuck Grassley in the 2022 Republican Party primary.
