–Friday’s filing deadline for statewide office shows a contested race for the GOP nomination in Senate District #5 and no Democratic candidates in a pair of area House Districts.

Senate District #5 includes all of Kossuth, Winnebago, Emmet, Palo Alto, and Dickinson counties, as well as a portion of northeastern Clay County, and is currently represented by Republican Dave Rowley of Spirit Lake. According to the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office, Rowley will face a primary challenge from Algona business owner Stacey Besch, as each has submitted the necessary paperwork to be on the June 2nd primary ballot.

No one within this Senate district filed the paperwork for the Democratic party’s nomination.

Both of Kossuth County’s state representatives are unopposed on the primary ballot and could be unopposed in November.

Henry Stone of Forest City represents House District #9, which includes all of Winnebago and Emmet counties, along with most of Kossuth County. He is the only name on the ballot for June’s Republican party primary, with no names submitted for the Democratic party nomination.

John Wills of Spirit Lake represents House District #10, which encompasses all of Dickinson and Palo Alto counties, along with northeastern Clay County and southwestern Kossuth County. He is also unopposed on the GOP primary ballot, with no names listed for the Democratic party nomination in this district either.

Candidates for county elections have until the end of the business day on Friday, March 20th to submit their paperwork.
