–Leaders with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and the Iowa Nutrient Research and Education Council (INREC) announced a new, three-year soil sampling project this week for farmers in the Des Moines and Raccoon River watersheds. Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig tells KLGA News that the project can help farmers with their nutrient management strategies, which can be beneficial in multiple ways.

Naig says they are looking for participants right now in five counties upstream from the Des Moines metro area.

The project is being launched this spring in Boone, Calhoun, Greene, Hamilton, and Webster counties.

Participating farmers will be asked to provide basic field information such as crop rotation, nitrogen management, manure use, and cover crop history, along with a short post-season survey.

While the project is currently focusing on those five areas, officials say additional counties in the Boone, Des Moines, Middle Cedar, and Raccoon River watersheds will be added for fall sampling.
