–The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors approved adding road signs near the intersection of 210th Street and 90th Avenue west of Algona during their meeting Tuesday. The board instructed County Engineer Doug Miller last week to look at ways to improve signage at the intersection following a fatal crash in late April.
5th District Supervisor Amber Garman expressed a desire to also add signs for the drivers along 210th Street warning them of heavy cross traffic as they approach the intersection from the east or west.
After a lengthy discussion, 4th District Supervisor Kyle Stecker proposed adding those east/west warnings as well.
The board approved adding the signs by a vote of 4-1, with 2nd District Supervisor Howard Haas voting against the proposal. Haas says he’s not sure adding more signs will improve safety.
As part of the proposal, the board will review the issue in two months. 47-year-old Carolee Wise of Emmetsburg was killed when her vehicle was hit broadside by a semi who failed to stop at this intersection on April 27th. Crash data provided by Kossuth County EMS and presented to the board last week shows a higher number of crashes at this intersection with more severe injuries over the last decade.
