–The Algona City Council approved the 2nd and 3rd readings of an ordinance during their meeting Monday that will establish a “Social District” in the downtown area that can be activated during certain events. New state legislation allows cities to establish these social districts where alcoholic beverages can be consumed outdoors in public spaces, but the legislation requires cities to first establish an ordinance that clearly defines where the district is and the policies need for activation. City Administrator Jacob Tjaden addressed the council prior to the vote.
Tjaden says the legislation also makes it clear that residents are not allowed to bring their own alcohol into the social district, where boundaries will be clearly marked while activated.
After approving the final readings of the ordinance, the council voted to activate the social district for this week’s Founder’s Day celebration on Friday from 4PM-Midnight and Saturday from 9 AM-11 PM. The approved list of vendors includes Pep’s, Billie Jo’s, Perky Parrot, Algona Axe House, Premier Pizza, Top Dog Brewing, Top of Iowa Lucky Wife, and Plum Creek Winery.
