The Algona Bulldog softball team is moving on to the regional semifinal round after storming past the Okoboji Pioneers 19-1 on Thursday night in the class 3A – region 6 quarterfinal round.
Algona struck for 12 runs in the first inning, as the first ten batters of the game all reached base, and the Bulldogs eventually sent 17 to the plate.
The Bulldogs added 7 more in the second inning, batting around again, sending ten batters to the plate and extending their lead to 19-0.
Okoboji scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by pinch hitter Annamaria Simone, before Algona catcher Reagan Haynes eventually picked Simone off of second base later in the inning to end the game.
Allison Trunkhill was the winning pitcher, throwing the first three innings, not permitting any runs, while striking out seven, walking one, and giving up two base hits. Katie Trunkhill pitched the final inning, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while punching out two batters.
Allison Trunkhill finished 2/3 at the plate with three RBI, Katie Trunkhill was 2/2, and Bella Jo Dunning was 2/3 and drove in two runs. Ten different Algona players finished with at least one RBI in the win, as the Bulldogs banged out 11 base hits and capitalized on six Pioneer errors.
Algona improves their record to 22-6, the most wins for the Bulldogs since 2007, while Okoboji ends the season 0-25.
Algona will host Spirit Lake on Saturday night in the regional semifinals, as Spirit Lake rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to beat Sheldon 5-3 on Thursday night. On the other side of the region 6 bracket, Humboldt defeated Estherville Lincoln Central 9-1, and PCM blanked Southeast Valley 9-0.
