–The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship recently announced an expansion of the Cattle and Conservation Working Lands program to include 22 counties located within the greater Des Moines watershed. Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig made the announcement last week, and he tells KLGA News they are excited to offer the program to area cattle producers.
Along with economic benefits to expanding the cattle herd, Naig says the environmental benefits will be felt across the area by taking less performing row crop acres out of production.
The program initially started in southwest Iowa’s Page and Taylor counties, before it was expanded to a total of 8 counties in that area.
Now that they are offering the program throughout these 22 counties, which includes Kossuth and the surrounding area, they expect those numbers to really take off.
Producers in eligible counties can visit their local USDA Service Center to sign up or go to www.costshare.iowaagriculture.gov.
