–The Kossuth County Public Health Department is offering free radon test kits to area residents through the state’s “Combat Cancer” initiative. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and Iowa has the highest average indoor radon concentration levels in the country. Cede Becker is a Registered Nurse with Kossuth Public Health, and she tells KLGA News they have the kits available right now.
Any homeowner in Kossuth and the surrounding counties is eligible to receive a free kit on a first-come first-served basis.
Each kit has a tracking number that will allow health officials to track monitor radon levels in different areas of the state. Becker says the kits should be placed in the home’s basement if possible.
If tests reveal high radon levels, Public Health can assist homeowners with mitigation costs. Becker says these kits will likely be scooped up quickly.
The radon detection kits can be picked up in the Community Health Office at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona while supplies last. Anyone with questions can call their office 515-295-4430.
