A judge has ruled two Libertarians picked earlier this month for spots on Iowa’s General Election ballot are ineligible because the party’s nominating process did not follow state law. Thomas Laehn is a Libertarian who did qualify to run for Iowa’s U-S Senate seat. He says lawmakers in Des Moines have taken steps over the past few years to make it more difficult for Libertarians to qualify for the Iowa ballot.
Laehn is the first Libertarian elected to office in Iowa — winning two terms as Greene County Attorney. Laehn submitted 10-thousand petition signatures in June that met the criteria for getting his name on the ballot as a candidate for the U-S Senate.
Rick Stewart a Libertarian from Cedar Rapids, has also qualified for Iowa’s second congressional district seat this year.
