–Algona Police are beginning an effort this week to increase enforcement of the city’s “Jake Brake” ordinance.

The city council approved an ordinance prohibiting the practice of using engine and compression brakes, or “Jake Brakes” within the city limits back in 2012. The excessive noise caused by this type of braking can be disruptive to people located near the roadway, both during the daytime and evening hours. The ordinance established a fine of $50 for any violations.

Algona Police Chief Bo Miller said in a news release that the department wants to make sure everyone is aware that the ordinance is in place, especially for our local trucking companies and drivers.

One issue local officials feel may be confusing drivers is where the city limit lines are actually located. If you’re traveling on US Highway 18, the city limit begins west of town at the Algona Municipal Airport and goes all the way past Snap On east of town. If you’re traveling on US Highway 169, the city limits begin on the north side of town near the Kossuth County Secondary Roads building and end just past Kossuth Regional Health Center on the south side of town.

Miller says they understand that emergency situations exist where it will be necessary to use this type of brake, but their focus is on helping to create a peaceful environment for citizens, without negatively impacting safety.

If you have any questions about the ordinance, you can contact the Algona Police Department at 515-295-3515.
