Former Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear Garrett Heying is wrapping up his preparations for his first season of college baseball at Viterbo, as the V-Hawks open up the season on Friday, February 2nd against Freed-Hardeman (TN).
Heying wrapped up a decorated career for the Bishop Garrigan baseball team last season with the best numbers of his career, batting .531 with 6 home runs and 43 runs batted in, and talked about what led to the decision to commit to Viterbo.
With the pressure of choosing a college off his back, Heying channeled his performance into a selection to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State Super Team, an accolade that takes all high school players in the state of Iowa into account regardless of their school’s classification. Heying was one of three players from class 1A selected, joining Newman Catholic’s Doug Taylor and Max Burt, both of whom are on the Iowa Hawkeye baseball roster this year. Heying was unaware of the state super team prior to his selection.
Even with the accolades aside, Heying says his senior year was the most fun he’s had playing baseball up to this point.
Since that time, Heying has focused on getting healthy and getting back to the process of getting better as soon as possible.
While not sure of the exact role he will play this season, Heying is taking a patient approach.
Heying says a deep catcher room is challenging him to get better.
Viterbo is scheduled to open the season with four games against Freed-Hardeman.
