Driver Ignores Barricades, Has to be Rescued

–A truck driver from New York had to be rescued from her vehicle after driving past road closed signs in rural Palo Alto County early Thursday morning.

According to the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office, a call came in just after 5:15 AM Thursday requesting assistance in the 4200 Block of 510th Avenue, about 2 miles west of Rodman.

Upon arrival, Deputies conducted a brief investigation and determined a 2022 Freightliner Semi, driven by Joan Griffey of Olean, New York, was hauling a 2024 trailer when she drove past the barricades at the intersection of 510th Ave. and County Road B55.

The report states that Griffey continued north on 510th Ave. and drove through multiple areas of water, before the semi became stuck on a washed-out section roadway.

Emmetsburg Firefighters and personnel from Palo Alto County Emergency Services assisted the Sheriff’s Department conduct a water rescue of Griffey, who was successfully retrieved around 5:45 AM.

An investigation into this incident is ongoing.
