–Ten students from Iowa Lakes Community College and the Iowa Lakes Career Academy, including one from Kossuth County, recently brought home several awards from the Skills USA competition in Atlanta, Georgia. The competition allows students from across the country to put their technical skills to the test, with over 6,000 competitors in 115 skilled and leadership competitions.
Benjamin Nielsen of Templeton, Iowa ended up taking second place in the college-level Power Equipment Technology division, the highest finish for any of the Iowa Lakes students.
Among the Iowa Lakes competitors, Jacob Haase of Burt finished 24th in the College-Level Welding Fabrication division. Other area competitors include Bryce Rooney of Emmetsburg, who finished 7th in the High School-Level Motorcycle Service Technology category and Zachary Borchers of Graettinger, who took 9th in the High School-Level Power Equipment Technology division.
The competitions at Skills USA are designed and judged by nearly 2,000 industry professionals, which ensures the skills that the students showcase are practical and relevant to the employer’s needs.
