Former Area Priest Facing Felony Theft Charges

–A Catholic Priest who served parishes in Kossuth County is facing a pair of felony charges following an investigation into misappropriated funds.

According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, the Catholic Diocese of Sioux City asked for an investigation after allegations of misappropriated funds were reported by parishes in Algona and Bancroft. As a result of the investigation, charges have been filed against Father Steven McLoud, 65, currently of Fort Dodge.

McLoud is facing charges of:

–1st Degree Theft (Class C Felony)

–Fraudulent Practices in the 1st Degree (Class C Felony)

The investigation alleges that from August of 2017 through January of 2023, McLoud knowingly falsified receipts of utility bills, reimbursement of mileage expenses and other expense documents while serving as a Priest at Parishes in Algona and Bancroft. Law Enforcement officials say the amount of money missing was close to $70,000.

McLoud has been ordered to make an initial appearance in Kossuth County District Court at 9AM on August 28th.
