–The City of Algona will begin smoke testing in the sanitary sewer system this week, in an effort to identify areas where clear water may be leaking into the sewer system. Deputy City Administrator Barb Smith tells KLGA News that the testing is part of the process to help find answers for areas of town impacted by sewer backups earlier this year.

The city is partnering with WHKS Engineering to conduct the smoke tests this week in parts of Southeast and Southwest Algona (areas in green and yellow on the map).

The smoke is non-toxic, leaves no residue and creates no fire hazard, so if you get smoke in your home, you can simply vent it out by opening a door or window. Residents who notice smoke in their home that is not coming through a basement drain should contact City Hall by calling 515-295-2411. You can find out more at www.algonaiowa.gov.
