–The Algona Community School District is looking into the possibility of hiring a School Resource Officer to help add another security measure for students and staff. Superintendent Joe Carter addressed the Algona School Board during their meeting on Monday night.

Initial estimates provided to the school board place the cost of adding an SRO to the district at around $100,000.

Carter says the district is still trying to finalize language for all of the roles and responsibilities an SRO would have.

A new law passed this year requires school districts across the state with enrollment numbers of 8,000 or higher to formally decide whether or not to have School Resource Officers in their buildings. Eleven school districts across the state meet that enrollment requirement, and some like the Cedar Rapids School District already have SROs in place. Others, like the Iowa City School District, opted to not have SROs in their buildings.
