The two candidates running in Iowa’s 4th congressional district both oppose President Trump’s decision to import diesel fuel from Russia. Republican candidate Chris McGowan said there is an awful lot of pain at the pump.
Democrat Dave Dawson says Trump is violating a 2022 law that bans imports of all of Russian energy products, including diesel.
The candidates debated Wednesday night on Iowa PBS, covering a range of issues, including foreign policy. McGowan said the war in Iran has gone on too long and, hopefully, a successful end comes soon.
Dawson says the war has destabilized the fuel market and Iran has attacked U-S allies in the Middle East.
Dawson and McGowan addressed technology issues and agreed there should be federal guardrails for Artificial Intelligence. They also criticized the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s response to flooding that hit northwest Iowa two years ago. McGowan says it’s time for a bipartisan effort to reform FEMA.
Dawson says wholesale reform of the agency is necessary to ensure relief is provided more quickly.
Dawson is an assistant county attorney for Woodbury County. McGowan has worked for the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce for over two decades and has served as its president for the past 15 years.
