–A trial is underway in Kossuth County District Court, surrounding alleged incidents in August of 2021 and November of 2022.
Jury selection began Tuesday, and the prosecution has started to present their case against 26-year-old Rigoberto Mendez, on 3 counts of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse.
Online court records show a criminal complaint was filed on January 4th by the Algona Police Department, and an arrest warrant was issued later that day. A no contact order was also issued at that time, to prevent Mendez from having any contact with the alleged victim in the case.
Mendez was arrested on January 6th and entered a plea of not guilty later that month.
The charges stem from alleged incidents on August 1st of 2021 and November 10th of 2022.
If convicted, Mendez could face a sentence of up to 25 years in prison.
