–The Algona Police Department is raising funds to purchase a new dog that will serve as their K9 Officer. The Department’s current K9 Officer, Puma, will be turning 10 next year and will be retiring from service. Officer Brian Hillyer will be transitioning to the role of K9 Handler when the new dog is brought on board, and he tells KLGA News they are trying to make sure everything is ready to replace Puma.

Hillyer says he will have to undertake new training to become the K9 Handler, something he’s looking forward to doing.

Hillyer says they are starting their fundraising campaign now, as they have some time yet before Puma retires.

Donations can be dropped off at the Law Enforcement Center in downtown Algona, while some fundraising events are already in the works, with a local dog grooming company hosting an event on July 1st.
