Bishop Garrigan Girls Basketball Prevails in Top 10 Battle, Golden Bear Boys Doomed by Slow Start

-Bishop Garrigan girls basketball is now in sole possession of first place in the Top of Iowa West after the class 1A #8 Golden Bears held on to defeat class 3A #7 Forest City 49-45 Tuesday night, handing the Indians their first loss of the season.  The teams played even basketball early, as Forest City led 14-13 after one quarter behind two three pointers from Colette Loges.  The Golden Bears would outscore the Indians 15-10 in the second, taking a 28-24 lead at intermission.  The game changed in the third quarter, as Bishop Garrigan took control by outscoring Forest City 17-6 to take a 45-30 lead.  Emmi Bartolo hit two three pointers during the quarter and also converted on an and one opportunity.  Forest City rallied in the fourth quarter, as the Indians started the period on a 9-0 run, with Bishop Garrigan not scoring their first bucket of the frame until the 1:24 mark.  Although the Indians would outscore the Golden Bears 15-4 in the final eight minutes, Bishop Garrigan held on for the victory to improve to 10-1, including 7-0 in Top of Iowa West play, marking their 63rd straight conference win.  Hayden Brown led all scorers with 20 points in the loss for Forest City, while Graclyn Eastman scored 16 and Emmi Bartolo had 14 for Bishop Garrigan. Abbie Capesius tallied 15 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass, to go along with 6 assists.

-Bishop Garrigan boys basketball was defeated 69-58 at Forest City Tuesday night.  The Indians roared out to a 14-3 lead to open the first quarter as Bishop Garrigan never led.  The Indians outscored the Golden Bears 20-13 in the first quarter and 19-10 in the second to take a 39-23 lead at the half, while holding Bishop Garrigan leading scorer Michael Joyce without a first half bucket.  The Golden Bears would never get within single digits in the second half in spite of outscoring Forest City 17-10 in the fourth.  The win marks Forest City’s highest scoring output of the season so far, as the Indians improve to 6-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play, moving into a 3 way tie in first place with North Union and Lake Mills.  Bishop Garrigan falls to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference, as they are now tied for 4th place with Eagle Grove.  All 5 Indian starters scored at least 9 points, as Tommy Miller had 19, Carsen Hall scored 14, Ty Dillavou posted 11, and Ty Sopko and Willie Holmes both had 9.  For Bishop Garrigan, Drew Muller scored 17, while Carter Schwab and Michael Joyce had 13.  Rebounding would be a key factor for Forest City, outrebounding the Golden Bears 40-19 including 17-4 on the offensive glass.
