–The Donald R. Tietz Charitable Foundation is donating a parcel of land to the City of Algona to expand recreational opportunities in the area. During their meeting Monday, the Algona City Council approved a resolution accepting the donation of land near the aquatic center that was recently purchased by the foundation. The land was the site of the former Peck Auction House, and includes some 51 acres with open green space and access to the East Fork of the Des Moines River. Algona City Administrator Jacob Tjaden tells KLGA News that this area was identified as a place to add recreational opportunities many years ago.

As a part of the agreement, the city will develop a comprehensive plan to create and maintain a public park and recreational amenities in the new space. Tjaden says they have a couple of things to get started on in the coming months.

Tjaden says this is an exciting opportunity for the city.

Some initial concepts for expanding recreational opportunities in this area were part of a community visioning session held back in 2022. Those concepts can be viewed online by going to www.communityvisioning.org/algona.
