–Board members from the Donald R. Tietz charitable foundation joined officials from the city of Algona Thursday for a signing ceremony to officially transfer control of property along Orton Road. The foundation recently purchased the land, some 51-acres on the site of the former Peck Auction House and are giving it to the city of Algona to be used to increase recreational opportunities. Conley Nelson serves as President of the Tietz Foundation Board of Directors, and he spoke with KLGA News prior to the signing ceremony.

The city council approved the agreement during their meeting earlier this week before it was officially signed Thursday. Algona Parks and Recreation Director Nick Diers tells KLGA News they are excited to use this land and provide more opportunities for area residents to enjoy the outdoors.

Diers says the area is already well used, with the new Pickleball courts and Algona Aquatic Center nearby, and it’s also a popular area for running enthusiasts.

The land has access to the East Fork of the Des Moines River and sits between South Park and Call State Park. The city will begin preliminary work on the area over the next few months.
