–College musicians from across the Midwest will converge on Algona Saturday to compete for scholarship money and the chance to perform at the national level. The Iowa Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters is hosting the event at the Wilcox Performing Arts Center Saturday afternoon. Paul Wigley is President of the Iowa NSAL Chapter, and he tells KLGA News they are excited to host this event for the first time.

The National Society of Arts and Letters was formed 80 years ago this week, but the Iowa Chapter, which is headquartered in Algona, was only formed last May. The primary purpose of the organization is to provide scholarships for young artists. Wigley says the competition will bring in performers from not only Iowa, but surrounding states as well.

Along with the scholarship money, the winning contestant will qualify for the National musical theatre competition, which will be held at the University of Illinois in May. Wigley says this is an exciting opportunity for college musicians and for music enthusiasts around the area.

The competition is scheduled to begin at 12:30 PM Saturday at the Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona. The event is open to the public with no admission charge.
