–A former Britt Police Officer has now been formally charged with five separate felonies following an investigation into alleged misconduct.
Britt Police Chief Tyler Harmon released a statement Friday regarding an investigation into allegations against former Officer Ben Mehmen. In the statement, Harmon says he was contacted by a Britt area female on March 26th, where she asked to speak with him about some conduct that had been ongoing between herself and one of his officers.
The caller stated the incidents had begun in September of last year and continued through this February. The officer was identified as Ben Mehmen, and after speaking with the female and gathering other details, all information was turned over to the Clear Lake Police Department for further investigation.
Mehmen’s employment was terminated on March 29th. Between that date and April 17th, Clear Lake Police conducted their investigation which resulted in Mehmen’s arrest on Thursday (April 18th). He is facing four counts of Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (Class C Felony) and one count of Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Air/Blood Flow Causing Bodily Injury (Class De Felony).
Mehmen was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail to await an initial court appearance. Online court records show he is scheduled to have a preliminary court hearing on April 29th, and that a no contact order has been issued to prevent any contact with the alleged victim in the case.
