–The auto-tour route at the Union Slough Wildlife Refuge near Bancroft is currently open through the weekend for area residents to drive through. Erich Gilbert serves as the Assistant Refuge Manager at the Union Slough, and he tells KLGA News the refuge adapts to the wet and dry conditions as needed.
Sandhill Cranes returned to the refuge for the first time in over 100 years back in 2019, and Gilbert says they have been back ever since.
Gilbert says there is a wide variety of wildlife that you’ll see if you come out and take the tour.
He says they do have a few tips for those who are thinking about coming out and taking the tour.
The tour route is 4.5 miles long and begins near the Union Slough headquarters along County Road A42 east of Bancroft. The route is open from sunrise to sunset through Sunday, May 12th when it will close for the primary nesting season, before reopening on August 1st.
