–Area residents have until the end of the week to submit comments to the Iowa Department of Transportation regarding a reconstruction project along Highway 18 east of Algona scheduled to begin next spring. Pete Hjelmstad is a Field Services Coordinator for the Iowa DOT, and he tells KLGA News they are upgrading the highway from Algona to Sexton.

Construction is scheduled to start in April of 2025, and will take the entire summer to complete. Hjelmstad says traffic will be controlled by flaggers when construction is taking place.

The DOT held a meeting about the project earlier this month in Algona, but they are taking comments through June 21st. Hjelmstad says so far the feedback they are getting is mostly positive.

Hjelmstad says they studied traffic patterns along Highway 18 from Garner to Spencer to find the places where these upgrades would make a difference.
