–Members of the Algona Fire Department were recently awarded a traveling trophy as the top fundraisers at an event that supports the American Lung Association. The Fight for Air climb is a fundraising effort that benefits people with lung disease that literally fight for every breath they take. Mike Sabin served as captain for the AFD team, and he tells KLGA News many of the department’s veteran members have done the climb in years past.

This year’s climb was held on April 7th in downtown Des Moines, and Sabin says it doesn’t sound like a lot of climbing on paper.

While members of the public can participate in the climb, there are special categories for Firefighters and other emergency personnel. Sabin says the Firefighters climb the steps in full turn-out gear.

The Algona squad raised nearly $1,800 for the American Lung Association, earning them top honors in the Firefighter category. Sabin says they were surprised to learn they had raised the highest amount.

The seven-member team included Sabin, Nick Buchanan, Chad Besch, Brady Bailey, Chris Lawson, Taylor Prothman and Alex Kenne. Sabin says the traveling trophy is here in town, and they hope to go back next year to take top honors once again. He also says they will be challenging area departments to participate in the event as well. To learn more about the Fight for Air climb, you can go online to www.action.lung.org.
