The Algona baseball team is on to the class 3A – substate 2 second round, as the Bulldogs defeated Webster City for the 3rd time this season, final score 10-5.
Algona scored 2 runs in the first inning on back-to-back triples by Tate Garman and Tate Slagle, followed by an RBI single from Aiden Ulrich. Algona then fell behind 4-2 after the top of the 3rd, giving up 3 unearned runs after committing 2 of their 5 errors on the night.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the 3rd, but had bases loaded with no outs and popped out 3 times in a row, missing a bigger scoring opportunity. After a scoreless 4th inning, a one run in the top of 5 by the Lynx to make the score 5-3. Algona would score 3 in their half of the 5th, as Garman hit a two run single, then Algona put the game away with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th. Garman picked up the win in relief, pitching 3 innings and allowing 1 run in relief of Aiden Ulrich, who worked the 1st 3 innings. Slagle worked a 1-2-3 7th to close the game. Slagle, Garman, and Daniel Kemna all finished with multihit games for the Bulldogs, who ended the night with 10 base hits and took advantage of 7 walks and 5 errors by the Lynx.
Algona hosts Boone on Monday night in the next round, as the Toreadors shut out Humboldt 9-0 last night. On the other side of the bracket, North Polk beat Greene County 15-0 and ADM topped Ballard 6-2.

Bishop Garrigan 0
The season has come to an end for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear softball team, who was defeated 8-0 last night at the hands of class 1A #4 ranked St. Edmond in the class 1A – region 2 semifinal round. Bishop Garrigan could not capitalize on early scoring opportunities, stranding a runner on base in the first inning, and stranding 2 in both the second and third innings. After that, the Golden Bears would not get another base runner for the rest of the game, as St. Edmond senior Kaili Henning retired the last 13 Bishop Garrigan batters.
The Gaels struck first in the second inning for 2 runs. After St. Edmond loaded the bases with no outs, the Golden Bears were on the brink of getting out of the inning, getting the next two outs with no runs scoring, but Faith Shirbroun hit a two out – two run double off of the left field wall to make the score 2-0. In the fourth inning, the Gaels sent 8 batters to the plate, scoring 5 runs to blow the game open, then added an insurance run in the 6th. Kaili Henning pitched a 3 hit shutout, striking out 11 Golden Bears and walking just two for St. Edmond. Ella Schaaf’s final stat line for Bishop Garrigan was 6 innings pitched, 9 hits and 8 runs allowed, with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Golden Bear season ends at 17-8, while St. Edmond faces Saint Ansgar in the regional final on Monday.
