–The City of Algona is working with a pair of engineering firms to try and find solutions for residents impacted by sewer back ups earlier this year. Deputy City Administrator Barb Smith tells KLGA News that the city has WHKS and Bolton & Menk looking for ways to identify how the sewer system is being inundated in certain areas of town.
Smith says they are also working on a plan to try and minimize the impact to homeowners who may have a footing tile on their property that feeds directly into the sanitary sewer system.
The city will conduct more smoke testing to find any other footing tiles that are hooked into the sanitary sewer system. Smith says they are closely monitoring the South Main Street area where sewer backups occurred for the second time since the road was rebuilt nearly a decade ago.
Smith says many homeowners may have no idea there’s a footing tile on their property that drains into the sewer.
The city council has heard from residents along South Main Street on multiple occasions since storms caused sewer backups in that area of Algona in June.
