Slagle Named to State Super Team, Several Local Athletes Earn All-State Selections

The All-State Iowa high school baseball and softball teams have been announced following the conclusion of the selection process by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.

In class 3A baseball, Algona junior and Iowa Hawkeye commit Tate Slagle earned a spot on the All-State Super Team, which honors the top baseball players in the state regardless of class. Slagle was one of just four juniors named to the team, with the rest of the roster comprised of seniors. Slagle finished his 2024 campaign with a slash line of .481/.621./894 at the plate, hitting 7 homers, driving in 45 runs, and stealing 31 bases. He also posted a perfect 8-0 record on the mound with an ERA of 0.99 to go along with 106 strikeouts in 56.1 innings pitched.

Fellow Algona Bulldog junior Aiden Ulrich was named as a third team all-state selection after hitting .436 with 4 homers and 45 RBI. Ulrich’s pitching stats included a 7-2 record, 1.91 ERA, and 77 strikouts.

In class 1A baseball, Bishop Garrigan senior Justin Bauer earned first team all-state honors, his second career all-state selection. Bauer becomes just the eighth player in Bishop Garrigan program history to earn multiple all-state selections. Bauer finished 2024 with a .404 batting average, stealing 40 bases along the way. He also posted a 7-0 record with a 1.16 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched.

In class 1A softball, a pair of Golden Bears were honored, with senior Abbie Capesius garnering a first team all-state selection and junior Hanna Merron earning honorable mention. The all-state selection was the third of Capesius’ career, after finishing 2024 with a .506 average and a career-high of 13 home runs. Capesius ended her career as Bishop Garrigan’s all time leader in batting average, homers, stolen bases, and RBI. Merron set career best marks with a .493 average, 6 home runs, and 33 RBI.

In class 2A softball, North Union senior Beth Streuber was named as a second team all-state selection. Streuber batted .409 with 4 homers and 22 runs driven in.
