–The Algona School Board approved updates to certain board policies during their meeting this week to comply with changes in state law. Back in May, Governor Kim Reynolds signed Senate File 2435 into law, which sets regulations for chronic absenteeism. Superintendent Joe Carter says the new law defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% of the days in a particular grading period.
The law also stipulates that further action is needed if a student misses 15% of the days in a grading period.
Carter says making sure kids are in school when they need to be is something the district has focused on over the last few years.
The district will use a semester as their grading period, meaning a student who misses 9 or more days in a semester would be considered chronically absent.
