–A longtime teacher at Algona High School has been named the latest recipient of the David Shumway Outstanding Educator award by the Algona Community School Foundation. Liz Rosonke was honored at a workshop for teachers this past Thursday.
Rosonke began her teaching career at AHS back in 1968 after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa. When she started, the current AHS building was not complete, as she started her career at what became the OB Laing Middle School building.
Over the years, she taught English and Literature classes at all levels, while also serving as the cheerleading sponsor for 17 years and the mock trial sponsor.
Rosonke, who was the first recipient of the “AHS Class of 1979 Techer of the Year” award, addressed the high school faculty after receiving this honor, and highlighted how she was able to find a way to enjoy going to work each day.
The award is named after David Shumway, a long-time member of the Algona Community School Foundation board. Shumway believed in merit pay, and the award is meant to showcase meritorious work in the district. Along with the recognition, the award comes with a prize of $2,500.
