–Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig announced the latest round of grants for the Local Food for Schools (LFS) program this week, and once again the Algona Community School District is participating. Jill Nelson is the Food Service Program Manager for the Algona School District, and she tells KLGA News they first received this grant funding in the 2022-2023 school year.

Nelson says the district works through what’s called a “food hub” where they can purchase fresh products from Iowa producers.

While the Algona school district works with the Iowa Food Hub out of Decorah, they can work with agencies that are just across the border.

Nelson says they hope the program will continue.

Over 160 schools have participated through the first 2 rounds of grant funding, with nearly 2-million dollars being awarded to purchase local foods.
