Tuesday’s Area Scoreboard: Swift Sets BG XC School Record, Algona XC Opens at Webster City

Cross Country

-Bishop Garrigan cross country competed at Newman Catholic’s meet at NIACC and had two athletes racing.  In the girls race, freshman Julie Swift set a new school record for the 5k, crossing the finish line in 21 minutes 31 seconds, placing 6th overall in the race and beating the old school record of Alisa Altman by 21 seconds.  In the boys race, Corbin Darling finished in 65th in 25 minutes 32 seconds.

-Algona cross country opened up their season at Webster City Tuesday night.  In the girls race, sophomore Mara Davis was the top Bulldog, completing the 5k course in 21 minutes and 53 seconds to place 4th in the small school gold division.  The other runners in Algona’s top 5 were Malyn Davis, who was 12th place in 23 minutes 55 seconds, Olivia Snider, who took 26th in 25 minutes 12 seconds, Sienna Fehr, who was 31st in 26 minutes 24 seconds, and Kaitlyn Burns, who rounded out the top 5 in 27 minutes 13 seconds, placing 38th.

-In the boys race, Gavin Weber led the way in a time of 17:09, placing 2nd in the small school gold division.  Brooks Morgan crossed the line in 18:52, placing 7th, Barrett Morgan clocked in at 19:19 for 12th place, Isaac Wilson followed him in 13th in 19:30, and Ryley Riggert rounded out the top 5 in 15th in 19:34. 

Volleyball

-North Union dropped their Top of Iowa West opener, losing in 3 sets to North Iowa.  Bison took the first set 25-16, the 2nd 25-21, and the 3rd 25-15.  North Iowa improves to 4-1 with the win, while North Union falls to 2-2. 

-West Bend-Mallard continued their strong start to the season, going 3-0 and winning the Okoboji tournament.  The Wolverines would defeat host Okoboji (21-14, 14-21, 15-12), as well as Estherville Lincoln Central (21-18, 21-18), and Sibley-Ocheyedan (21-16, 19-21, 15-9) on their path to the tournament victory, as they are now 4-0 to start the season.
