–While the nation will be focused on the outcome of Tuesday’s Presidential election, voters in Kossuth County will be selecting two new members to the Board of Supervisors, and one of those races features three candidates. The District #5 Board seat that is currently held by Roger Tjarks will be decided between Bruce Meinders, Amber Garman, and Mel Haler.
Meinders was uncontested during the Democratic Primary back in June, and during an interview with KLGA News, he highlighted issues with the budget and a lack of transparency as the major reasons for getting into the race.
The 5th District spans a wide area of central and northern Kossuth County, meaning drainage will be a big issue for the winner. Meinders discussed problems with an issue from nearly a decade ago that just recently came to light.
Former Kossuth County Auditor Amber Garman won a 3-way race in the primary election to secure the Republican nomination for the seat. Garman has spent the past 4 years in the private sector, and felt now is the time to get back into public service.
Garman says finding solutions for drainage problems, like the recently discussed issue from nearly a decade ago, will be a key for the new board.
Mel Haler is running as an Independent for the 5th District seat, and he says budget issues and unanswered questions got him thinking for jumping in the race.
Haler cited his experience with the Kossuth County Fair Board as something that might help him make better decisions when it comes to issues like drainage.
The District #2 board seat is also up for election this year, with Republican Howard Haas the only name on the ballot.
Kossuth County Sheriff Roger Fisher and Auditor Tammy Eden will both be the only names on the ballot, but former Deputy Sheriff Brian Runneberg is trying to muster a write-in campaign after losing to Fisher in June’s Republican Primary.
