–Algona High School graduates who have received the Gladys Mahana Scholarship over the last 30 years are invited to attend a special celebration Sunday afternoon at the First Congregational Church. Kris Schlievert has served on the Congregational Church Scholarship Foundation, and she tells KLGA News they are hoping to come together one last time and celebrate the gift that Gladys Mahana left in 1992.
The scholarship is handed out in conjunction with the Algona Community School Foundation. Schlievert says that on average, they hand out around 22 awards each year.
Mahana left specific instructions for the criteria used to select the scholarship recipients.
Anyone who has received the scholarship over the years or their family members are invited to attend the ceremony.
Schlievert says they know not all of the scholarship winners can make it Sunday, and they have heard from some past recipients.
The money that is left in the Mahana Scholarship fund will be turned over to the Algona Community School Foundation so they can continue to administer the award in the future. The reunion is scheduled to begin at 2 PM on Sunday, June 1st in the fellowship hall of the First Congregational Church at 315 S. Moore Street in Algona.
