–Work on the Nebraska Street Corridor Project is underway in downtown Algona leaving some areas blocked off to the traveling public. A block of Thorington Street closed on Monday, and City Administrator Jacob Tjaden says the parking lot at the corner of Nebraska and Thorington is closing as well.

During an interview with KLGA’s Al Lauck this week, Tjaden noted that these improvements were identified as part of a downtown assessment conducted back in 2019.

Tjaden says they have been trying to work with the people who will be most impacted by the closures over the next few months.

The city is receiving a grant from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to include water quality initiatives in the project to reduce pollution in storm water runoff. Construction is scheduled to be primarily completed by November 15th, with total completion scheduled for the summer of 2026.
