Grandparent Scam Making the Rounds Once Again

–Local law enforcement officials are alerting area residents that one of the most commonly used scams is making another appearance in our area. The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office took to social media Wednesday to say the “Grandparent” scam is being reported once again and to be cautious.

The “Grandparent” scam involves a phone call stating that a member of your family is in trouble and needs money immediately to get out of jail or pay hospital expenses. The scammers will often send someone to your door to pick up the payment.

Residents are reminded that law enforcement, jails, and attorneys do not call people to get money, and that bail or fines are typically paid at the courthouse, police station or jail and are not paid with gift cards.

Officials also note that a “court appointed courier” does not exist, and if someone comes to your home to pick up a payment, it’s a scam.

If you do receive a call stating they need funds immediately, you can always ask for proof of identification and a call-back number. Also, talk to family, friends or other people you may trust to help verify these claims. If you have lost money or the scam is in progress, you’re asked to contact the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office at 515-295-3514.
