–Local firefighters have been busy educating area residents on how they can stay safe during this National Fire Prevention Week. Algona Assistant Fire Chief Tony Rahm tells KLGA News they have been out in public and hosting groups at the fire station.
Rahm says that the school visits are helpful to both the students and staff members.
Tonight, firefighters will be traveling through the community for Operation EDITH, which stands for Exit Drills in the Home. Rahm says they want families to take a minute and think about what they would do if there was a fire in their home.
Rahm says fires can spread quickly, so having a plan in place can save lives.
Operation EDITH will begin at 6PM, with multiple fire trucks covering there own section of town. Along with practicing what to do in case of a fire, safety officials recommend having at least one smoke detector on each floor of your home, and making sure those smoke detectors have fresh batteries.
