Algona Girls Wrestling Team in 5th After Day One of State Tournament

The Algona Girls have 5 wrestlers alive after Day 1 of the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament in Coralville, including 4 semifinalists.  

At 100 pounds, Mara Davis won her opening round match 11-6 over Brooke Walrath of Linn-Mar, and then pinned Livia Smith of South Tama County in 3:57 to advance to Friday’s Semifinals. Davis will meet up with Kiara Ruiz, a Senior from Spencer who is 35-1 on the season. 

Laura Stohr came into the tournament seeded 12th, but she won her opening round match against 5th seeded Cora Schut of Sioux Center 6-4. In the Quarterfinals, Stohr was pinned by 4th seeded Addisen McGinness of Raccoon River Northwest. Stohr was eliminated from the tournament when she lost her consolation 2nd round match to Jada Mingus-Alfaro of Spencer. 

Freshman Ruby Roof continued her dominant season, winning twice by fall to advance to the semifinals and improve her record to 44-1 overall. Roof pinned Caroline Pohlman of Linn-Mar in 0:58 to begin the tournament, and the stuck Ayden Erickson of Perry in 2:47 to advance to secure a place on the podium. Roof will take on 4th seeded  Ellie Hancock of Raccoon River Northwest in the semifinals. 

Sienna Fehr earned her first state medal, going 2-1 Thursday. Fehr came in seeded 12th, but used an early reversal to defeat 5th seeded Bethann Templeman of Raccoon River Northwest in the opening round. Fehr lost her quarterfinal match with Mariaha Benedicts, before coming back to pin Ava Perkins of South Tama County in 3:43 to keep her season alive. Fehr will take on Mia Luck of Oskaloosa in the Consolation 3rd round, and can still finish as high as 3rd

Regan Jensen won 2 matches by fall to advance to the semifinals at 155. Jensen pinned Jolyssa Rodes Perez from Sioux City West in 2:38 to open the tournament and then pinned Amaziah Twillie of Burlington in 1:20 to advance. Jensen will take on 3rd seeded Layna DeMoss of Benton Community in the Semifinals, a rematch of from the Regional Tournament where Jenson defeated DeMoss 11-1.  

Reagan Haynes also won 2 matches by fall Thursday, pinning Serenity Malone of Cedar Rapids Washington in 1:51 and then sticking Cadence Heggen of Boone in 1:07 to secure a top 6 finish. Haynes will go up against 6th seeded Marli Badgley of North Metro, a combined program from Johnston, Urbandale, and Des Moines Christian.  

Algona currently sits in 5th place as a team after Day 1 with 52 points. Action will resume at 1PM on Friday inside the Xtream Arena in Coralville.
