A historic state tournament wrapped up for the Algona Bulldog girls wrestling team on Friday night at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville, where Algona finished as the class 2A runners-up, had the first two individual champions in program history, and five total Bulldogs placed.

Freshman Ruby Roof capped off a history season with a class 2A title at 125 pounds.  In the semifinal round, Roof was able to pin Ellie Hancock of Raccoon River Northwest in 2 minutes and 52 seconds, moving on to take on Camille Schult from Waverly-Shell Rock in the championship bout.  After giving up an early takedown to fall behind 3-0, Roof dominated the rest of the bout, scoring 16 straight before eventually pinning Schult.  Roof finishes her freshman season 46-1 and atop the class 2A podium.

Roof wouldn’t be alone as a state champion for long, as the final Bulldog wrestler of the night, Reagan Haynes, got through her semifinal at 190 with a pin over Marli Badgley of the North Metro team in the semifinal round in 3:01, then blitzed Eva Jara from Iowa City West in the championship bout, pinning her in just 37 seconds to capture the state title.

At 100 pounds, Mara Davis capped off her junior season as the state runner up.  In the semifinal match, Davis took on Kiara Ruiz of Spencer, who only had one previous loss on the season.  Davis gave up a takedown to start things off and fall behind 3-0, but battled back, getting a pair of takedowns of her own, reeling off 9 straight points and eventually winning 9-4.  In the championship match, Davis faced Nora Ohnemus from Indianola, who would win in a 15-0 tech fall over Davis.

Reagan Jensen would finish at the state runner up at 155, as Jensen scored a 10-7 win over Layna Demoss from Benton Community in the semis, but Jensen would be pinned in 4:37 in the tile bout by Skylar Slade of Southeast Polk.

At 135 pounds, Sienna Fehr placed 8th, as she was pinned in 3:28 in the 7th place match by Josephine Budererl from Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Algona, the second smallest team in class 2A, finished with 112 points, second only to Raccoon River-Northwest with 148.5. Rounding out the top five were Southeast Polk with 109, Ankeny with 105.5, and Iowa City Liberty with 82.5.
