–The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced the first-round of 2026 urban water quality projects on Monday, handing out over $1.2 Million for the implementation of new conservation practices. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced the funding of four projects across the state, including an effort in Humboldt County.
Humboldt County Soil and Water Conservation will receive $5,000 for their effort to increase pollinator habitat across the area. The “Buzz and Bloom” project will help establish plots of land at homes and businesses by providing seed, education, and support in an effort to support pollinators like Monarch Butterflies, Hummingbirds, and Bees, while at the same time filtering stormwater and building healthy soil.
Humboldt County residents will be able to apply for funding to help create these plots of land, that can range from 100-2500 square feet. Those interested in participating are required to attend a spring site prep workshop and maintain the site for at least five years. Applications can be picked up at the USDA Service Center in Humboldt or accessed online at www.threeriverstrail.org/buzz-bloom/.
Projects in Belle Plaine, Hiawatha, and Sioux Center also were included in this first round of IDALS funding.
